At K J Smith Solicitors, we can assist in the preparation and execution of a Change of Name Deed, in the event you wish to change your forename or surname, add names or rearrange your existing names.
A Change of Name Deed is not a Deed Poll. A Deed Poll is a similar instrument but this requires enrolling at the Royal Courts of Justice after which a notification will appear in The Gazette, an official public record of the British government.
Thank you for all your support and kindness.
A Change of Name Deed is a more private method of changing your name and once you have decided to change your name, you can use the new name for all purposes, including publishing marriage bands, legal proceedings and obtaining, or changing, details on a driving licence or passport.
If you wish to change the name of a child, you will require the consent of all other individuals with parental responsibility, i.e. parents and/or guardians. You can then use these to inform official bodies and financial institutions of your change of name.
Parents can choose to change the name of a child who is under the age of 18, however consent from both parents and/or guardians must be granted before doing so. You can then use these to inform official bodies and financial institutions of your change of name.
If you are changing the child’s name due to divorce or separation, an application to the courts must be made for the court to decide what is in the best interest of the child. If you are unsure who has parental rights over changing the child’s name, you can find more information here, on the official government website.
If you are changing a child’s name through a Deed Poll, children between the ages of 16-18 must sign the document as evidence of consent.
If you would like to change your name or that of your children, do contact us for a no obligation discussion about the options available.
