Experts are encouraging the Government to protect children from the potential implications of Brexit

Published: 5th January 2018

Child experts throughout the UK are joining forces to create the ‘Brexit and Children’ coalition, publishing a report that highlights the potential implications and effects that Brexit might have for children in the UK. Barnardo’s and The Children’s Society are just two of the organisations that have come together to form this coalition, which is focusing on ensuring correct measures are put in place to provide sufficient protection for children and their rights following Brexit.

The ‘Brexit and Children Coalition’ Report

The European Union currently has more than 80 legal instruments in place, providing protection to children in relation to key areas such as health and safety, asylum, migration, medical issues, personal rights, and specific child protection issues.

The report, produced by the newly-formed coalition, suggests that the Government should focus its attention on securing protection for children, particularly by ensuring that existing rights within the current EU framework are preserved within domestic law. It is also suggested within the report that the UK should look to continue as part of the EU family framework, which covers and regulates family law cases involving more than one country. In addition, the report also determines that a strategy should be put in place for the country to be able to continue membership of EU-level training, research, data, intelligence sharing and security, with a particular focus on the protection of children.

Further suggestions created with child protection in mind include ending a freeze on certain benefits, with a view to helping low-income families, and of course the children in particular. As well as financial support to the families, the report highlights the need for a guarantee from the Government that, following Brexit, the current proposed shared prosperity fund will continue to provide funding for projects that support young people and children.

The report also makes suggestions in relation to children, stating that children and young people should be a big consideration during the settlement of EU national status, and children and young people should be able to voice their opinions on matters relating to Brexit.

Protecting Children and Young People

The newly-formed coalition, consisting of a number of expert organisations and figures, is planning to focus on the Brexit negotiations, which it hopes will secure the protection of children and young people throughout the UK. By coming together and producing the report, the coalition has highlighted the potential implications of Brexit for children, and the ways in which these might be mitigated. Hopefully the report will encourage the Government to take all the points under consideration during the Brexit negotiations in order to safeguard the futures of children and young people throughout the country.
