A prenup doesn’t mean you love each other less, it means you respect each other more.
Ah, wedding season! The smell of fresh flowers, the sound of string quartets, the Pinterest boards
overflowing with rustic chic ideas, and wait for it…the awkward but necessary conversation about prenuptial agreements.
Nothing says romance like talking asset protection over champagne and cake samples. Before you roll your eyes and declare, “We’re in love, we don’t need that,” allow us to play Cupid…with a law degree.
What is a Prenup, and why don’t you need to whisper about it?
A prenup is a bespoke contract that will set out what is to happen to your financial assets, should there be a divorce in the future. Whilst nobody enters into a marriage with the intention of divorce, if it were ever on the cards, you have essentially already agreed how your financial assets will be split. It is very sensible, grown up and certainly not taboo.
Do you own a home? Have a retirement account? Maybe a vintage furniture collection that is worth more than your car? A prenup can help ensure what is yours stays yours.
A prenup is a plan for a “what if”, it’s not unromantic, it’s healthy (and much cheaper than therapy or litigation).
At KJS, we take planning for the future seriously which is why we offer a free 45-minute consultation to help you understand what a prenup could look like for you. No pressure, no jargon and absolutely zero judgement. Come in and speak to our Associate Solicitor Beth Pettifer (currently planning her own wedding …and prenup!).
