New Child Maintenance Online Tool Kit Released

Published: 7 May 2014

A new child maintenance tool kit has been released online by the Department of Work and Pensions to provide organisations and child maintenance clients with the latest information about changes to child maintenance and to aid the phasing out of the old Child Support Agency (CSA) system.

The DWP say that the new tool kit is in response to "the views of many of our stakeholders, who asked for tools and information to be available online".

The new Child Maintenance Tool Kit will include information about the wider issues that affect separated parents, including debt management advice and legal rights, practical guides to help separating couples deal with a range of separation issues and information on how to arrange child maintenance through the new Child Maintenance Service (CMS).

It also includes tools and information which explains what will happen when CSA arrangements start to come to an end.

The tool kit has been broken down into 5 main areas of interest:

  • Sorting out Separation - This includes a practical booklet on support for separating parents as well as guides on family mediation, a debt and budgeting fact sheet and an information pack for separated families.
  • Help with Child Maintenance - This includes an online Child Maintenance calculator to help estimate how much child maintenance would need to be paid under the new CMS, downloadable letter templates, leaflets and fact sheets and help and advice in dealing with conflict and financial issues.
  • Child Maintenance Arrangements - This includes guidance on the procedure for arranging child maintenance payments, making a family-based arrangement, information about the appeals process, liability orders, DNA testing and a guide to the new Child Maintenance Service
  • Ending CSA Arrangements - This includes information explaining what happens when Child Support Agency (CSA) arrangements come to an end and a detailed guide which explains the changes to the Child Support Agency (CSA) and how this will affect existing CSA clients
  • Case Studies - This includes a range of case studies showing examples of barriers to setting up child maintenance arrangements and how they can be overcome
