Married Men are 25% more likely to be overweight

Published: 22nd January 2014

A recent study published in the US by the journal 'Families, Systems & Health' has revealed that married men were 25% more likely to be overweight than single men or those in a casual relationship.

The study, based on data compiled by ProjectEAT, studied the levels of physical activity, BMI (Body Mass Index) and the dietary habits of 2,300 young people in the US, with a mixture of married, single and individuals in a committed relationship - with the gender split of 55% females and 45% males.

Any participant with a BMI greater than 25 was classed as being overweight. The authors of the study wrote, "Findings suggest that being married may be a risk factor for overweight/obesity in young adult men."

“Results indicated that married men were more likely to be overweight/obese … compared with single/casually dating and committed dating/engaged men". The results however, showed that relationship status had little effect on certain health behaviours such as healthy eating/fast food habits.

One possible explanation for the results, according to the president of the Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity, is that once a man is married, their 'need to hunt' for a partner is reduced, whereas men that are single spend more time keeping fit and taking pride in their appearance in order to appear attractive to the opposite sex. A similar study conducted in 2013 analysed 160 married couples and as the individuals grew more content in their relationships, their waistlines grew also.

Despite the results of these surveys, marriage is still considered good for you by many health experts. A study published in 2013 by the American Heart Journal found that married individuals actually recovered far more quickly after serious heart procedures as it was found that whilst marriage might help you to gain a few pounds, it also plays a big factor in reducing anxiety and stress related illnesses.

So whilst one who is married might be concerned that their waistline might be expanding, one should take comfort in the fact that it is a sign that you are in a happy and loving relationship with your partner.
