Following the introduction of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 which came into force on 13th March this year same sex couples not already in a formal Civil Partnership were able to marry. The first ceremonies took place as the clock struck midnight on Saturday 29th March.
The government always intended that those already in a Civil Partnership should be able to convert to marriage but initially the rules only allowed for such conversions to take place at a registry or local government office.
This proposal met with fierce criticism from campaigners for equal rights to marriage for same sex couples who felt outraged that same sex couples we not entitled to the same flexibility and choice of ceremony as heterosexual couples.
From today (10th December 2014) same sex couples wishing to convert to marriage can chose either a simple event registering their conversion or participating in a ceremony attended by family and friends.
In a further development, the government has also confirmed that those couples who do convert will be issued with a back-dated marriage certificate. The date the Civil Partnership began will be recorded as the start of the marriage and the certificate will also state the date of conversion.
